Angry Fred Comics is an independent Australian comics publisher from Queensland, making bold, action-driven comics with heart and a healthy dose of humour. From reimagined Australian legends to monster-hunting misfits, our stories blend history, horror, adventure and comedy. Founded in 2019 by writer and filmmaker Lucas Scheffel.
Who is Angry Fred?
Angry Fred is named for my late father, Fred. He wasn’t an angry man at all. He was passionate, strong-minded and generous, a natural storyteller who could talk for hours about movies.
From the 1950s to the early ’80s, Dad made Super 8 films starring family and friends, including a detective movie and a rodeo documentary that won an international award. He’d draw the curtains, kill the lights and project them in the living room, and watching those films is what set me on my own filmmaking path.
In 2007, Dad acted alongside me in The Counterpart, a B-grade feature about gangsters, hit-women and zombies that went on to DVD release across Australia and New Zealand. Those characters later became the Angry Squad.
About six months before he passed in September 2019, I showed Dad the first Angry Fred artwork. His only note: “You didn’t make his nose big enough.” Every page since is for him.
